Patio Scopebook · Fire Pit & Fireplace Install cost guide
An installed fire pit averages about $830 in 2026 per Lawn Love, with built-in pits at $1,000 to $3,000; an outdoor fireplace averages $3,000 per HomeAdvisor, with most between $1,500 and $8,000 and custom masonry far higher. Gas adds a line at $14 to $25 per foot and a permit. Labor and masonry take most of the cost of anything built in place.
Fire feature prices span a wider range than any other hardscape scope, from a few hundred dollars for a kit on a paver pad to twenty thousand for a custom masonry fireplace. The tiers are distinct, and the biggest cost decisions, fuel and construction type, are made before any material is chosen. This guide sets out the tiers, the add-ons that gas and electrical bring, how labor divides, and what the schedule and site do to the number.
Figures come from Lawn Love's December 2025 fire pit guide, HomeAdvisor's June 2026 fireplace guide and the cost table on the fire feature page, which also carries the calculator add-on for a gas pit with line.
| Item | Low | High | Unit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portable or kit fire pit on a paver pad | $250 | $2,200 | flat | Lawn Love 2025 typical range; average $830 |
| Built-in wood-burning fire pit | $1,000 | $3,000 | flat | Block or stone ring with steel or fire-brick liner |
| Built-in natural gas fire pit, unit only | $400 | $3,000 | flat | Lawn Love 2025; before the gas line |
| Natural gas line from meter | $14 | $25 | per linear ft | Trenched before the patio base; plumbing permit extra |
| Outdoor fireplace, block or prefab | $1,500 | $8,000 | flat | HomeAdvisor 2026 typical range; average $3,000 |
| Custom masonry outdoor fireplace | $8,000 | $21,000 | flat | Stone veneer, footing, chimney; can exceed $21,000 |
| Electrical circuit for ignition or lighting | $400 | $1,200 | flat | Licensed electrician; often shared with patio lighting |
The lowest tier is a portable or kit fire pit on a paver pad, $250 to $2,200 on the page's table, where the pad is a small paver project and the pit is bought. Lawn Love's December 2025 average of $830 sits here. The second tier is a built-in pit, wood at $1,000 to $3,000, or gas with a unit at $400 to $3,000 plus the line and permit. The third is an outdoor fireplace, block or prefab at $1,500 to $8,000 with HomeAdvisor's average of $3,000.
The top tier is custom masonry, $8,000 to $21,000 on the page's table and higher for large chimneys, stone facing and cooking hearths. Each tier roughly doubles the one below because each adds a trade: a mason, a gas fitter, an electrician. NAR's 2023 report scored a gas fire feature with flagstone patio at 56% recovery, which is typical of mid-tier work.
| Tier | 2026 range | Trades involved |
|---|---|---|
| Kit or portable pit on paver pad | $250 – $2,200 | Hardscape only |
| Built-in wood pit | $1,000 – $3,000 | Mason or hardscape |
| Built-in gas pit with line | $2,000 – $5,000 | Plus licensed gas fitter |
| Prefab or block fireplace | $1,500 – $8,000 | Mason, sometimes gas |
| Custom masonry fireplace | $8,000 – $21,000+ | Mason, gas, sometimes electrical |
Fuel sets the floor. Fixr's January 2025 guide, which puts the national average installed pit at $850, prices each fuel as shown in the table in this section. Charcoal and wood are the cheapest to install because nothing is plumbed; natural gas has the widest spread because the unit can be a simple ring burner or a large custom pan, and the line from the meter is priced on top.
Material moves the price within each fuel. For a 36-inch pit, Fixr gives concrete block at $200 to $1,000, stainless steel at $250 to $1,200, brick at $300 to $2,200 and field or quarried stone at $350 to $3,010. Block with a stone cap is the usual compromise: most of the look of stone at close to block pricing.
| Fuel type | Installed cost (Fixr, Jan 2025) |
|---|---|
| Charcoal | $250 – $350 |
| Propane | $300 – $950 |
| Wood-burning | $300 – $1,000 |
| Electric | $350 – $1,500 |
| Natural gas | $400 – $3,000, plus the gas line |

A natural gas line runs $14 to $25 per linear foot on the page's table, trenched from the meter, so distance is the main variable: thirty feet is under $1,000; a hundred feet across a driveway is not. Add a plumbing or gas permit, a pressure test, a key valve at the pit and often a shutoff at the house. A licensed gas fitter's minimum charge applies even to short runs. Propane avoids the trench but adds a tank enclosure and a regulator.
Electrical for ignition or lighting adds $400 to $1,200 for a circuit, and electronic ignition units themselves cost more than match-lit. The cheapest way to buy gas is to trench during the patio build, when the ground is open; the calculator's $3,500 gas pit add-on assumes that. Put any lighting on that circuit behind a timer; our analysis of the EIA's 2024 household survey found 43.4% of homes leave outdoor lights on all night. The gas versus wood page weighs the extra install cost against running cost and burn rules.
For a kit pit, labor is small: the pad is a short paver job. For a built-in wood pit, labor and masonry are half or more, since the ring is laid on a footing and lined with firebrick. For a gas pit, the fitter's labor and the trench often exceed the unit's cost. For a fireplace, labor dominates: a prefab kit is assembled, faced and capped over several days, and a custom masonry unit is weeks of skilled work where the material is a fraction of the bill.
This is why fireplace estimates vary more than fire pit estimates, and why a low fireplace bid should be read for what is missing: the footing, the firebrick, the chimney cap, the veneer or the hearth. The cost guide explains how labor rates move all of these regionally.
The footing under any built-in feature is separate from the patio base and is often its own line. So are the seating wall around a pit, the paver or stone pad, the fire glass or lava rock, the burner cover, the wind guard and the spark screen. Fireplaces add a hearth, wood storage boxes, a mantel and a chimney cap. Gas features add the permit, the pressure test and sometimes a second visit for final connection.
Hidden lines include cutting into an existing patio to run the line, which lifts and relays pavers; a propane enclosure with venting; and clearances that force a longer line or a relocated pad. Houzz found 18% of 2026 outdoor renovators adding a fire feature; the ones with surprises usually ran the line after the patio.

Building the feature with the patio saves the most: one trench, one mobilisation, one crew. Adding it a year later means cutting the patio, a separate gas fitter visit and a separate mason. Weather matters for masonry; mortar and firebrick need curing temperatures, so late-autumn fireplace builds can be delayed or need protection. Permit timing for gas is usually quick but inspection scheduling can add days. HomeAdvisor puts the average outdoor fireplace at $3,000, and fire features reward a single mobilisation more than most scopes.
Site adds cost through distance from the meter, through hand access for masonry materials, and through clearances. Fixr's guide says a fire pit should sit at least 10 to 15 feet from the house, other buildings and anything combustible, and some local codes ask for more. A feature that must be moved twenty feet from the house needs a longer line and often a longer path, and a wood feature near trees may need pruning. Ask for the fire code clearance to be confirmed before the location is priced, and see the permits guide for the rules involved.
Cut the tier before the details: a well-built built-in wood pit at $2,000 outperforms a cheap fireplace at $3,000. Choose match-lit over electronic ignition to drop the circuit. Choose a plain block surround with a stone cap over full veneer. Choose propane in an enclosure if the meter is far away. Defer the seat wall and lighting but sleeve for them. Lawn Love puts the average installed fire pit at $830, with built-ins at $1,000 to $3,000, and a block surround is where saving costs nothing in safety.
Keep the footing, the firebrick liner on wood units, the venting on gas enclosures, the licensed installer and the permit. Each is a few hundred dollars now and either a cracked ring, a gas hazard or a disclosure problem later. NAR found 78% of fire feature owners did it for livability; a feature you cannot legally use has none.
A kit pit on a 60 square foot paver pad with a spark screen: $800 to $2,000. A built-in wood pit, 44 inches across, firebrick lined, block with stone cap, on its own footing, in the patio build: $1,800 to $3,500. A built-in gas pit with a forty-foot line, permit, key valve, match-lit burner and fire glass, in the patio build: $3,000 to $5,500. A prefab fireplace kit faced in veneer with a hearth and chimney cap, wood-burning: $6,000 to $12,000.
A custom masonry fireplace with gas log lighter, stone facing and wood boxes lands at $12,000 to $25,000 depending on size and region. Regional labor moves each of these by a fifth or more. Use the calculator for the pit add-on and the estimate request for anything with a chimney.

Typically $14 to $25 per linear foot trenched from the meter, plus a permit and a licensed fitter's minimum, so $800 to $2,500 for most back-yard runs. Distance, crossing a driveway or existing patio, and rocky ground push it up. Running it during the patio build is the cheapest time.
Yes, usually two to five times, because it is a masonry structure with a firebox, chimney and facing. HomeAdvisor's June 2026 average is $3,000 for a fireplace against Lawn Love's $830 for a fire pit, and custom masonry fireplaces run into five figures. A fireplace also adds a footing and often a mason as a separate trade.
Yes. A masonry or block ring should sit on a compacted gravel or concrete footing below the patio base so it does not settle differently from the pavers. It is usually a few hundred dollars and is sometimes buried in the pit price; ask for it to be listed.
The unit itself costs several hundred dollars more, and it needs a circuit, which the page's table prices at $400 to $1,200. Together, electronic ignition with remote or app control commonly adds $1,000 to $2,000 to a gas pit. Match-lit and push-button piezo need no power.
Lava rock is inexpensive, typically under $100 for a residential pit. Fire glass costs more, often $100 to $400 depending on color and volume. Neither should be piled over the burner ports. Both are usually a separate line on a gas pit bid.
Often on installation, since there is no trench or meter connection, but a hidden tank needs a vented enclosure and a regulator, and refills cost more per hour than natural gas. For a pit used a few evenings a month, propane is usually cheaper overall; for daily use, natural gas wins within a few seasons.
More than during construction. Expect to lift and relay a strip of pavers for the line, a separate gas fitter visit, and a footing cut into the base. A gas pit that would add $3,500 during the build commonly costs $4,500 to $6,000 afterwards. Sleeving during the build avoids most of that.
